ESMMYC Special Guest Speaker Touts All-Inclusive Playground in Fort Mill Area

York County, SC (Sep. 1, 2018) All-inclusive playgrounds are important to our community. Recognizing this, community members are hard at work to build one in the Fort Mill area to serve students in the school district and nearby communities. HYPE Team Achieves Success with Multiple Projects

Clover, SC (May 15, 2018) The Healthy Young People Empowerment (HYPE) team, made of up of students at Blue Eagle Academy in Clover who are also members of the Boys and Girls Club of York County, are focusing on increasing access to physical activity at their school and Junior Eagle Academy. Read about their efforts after they formed in 2015 as a result of the Let’s Go! South Carolina Initiative.

S.C. Fitness Gram Data Released

SC (May 22, 2018) S.C. FitnessGram Data released (for the 2016-2017 school year) shows that 36% of school age youth are overweight or obese and nearly half do not meet the Healthy Fitness Zone standard for cardiorespiratory fitness. Also, children in poverty were at the highest risk for lesser fitness status. Weight and cardiorespiratory fitness are important to young people’s health. It will take a concerted effort by those who care for children in the home, early care and education centers, 5K-12 schools, community organizations, health care centers and community leaders to provide environments that support students in being physically active and eating healthy!

Healthy Together 5-2-1-0 Guest Speaker

York County, SC (Apr. 30, 2018) Healthy Together 5-2-1-0 was featured at the ESMMYC general membership meeting. Rolled out in the Fort Mill and Rock Hill School Districts, this program reinforces the importance of healthy eating and active living. ESMMYC partnered with Atrium Health to support partners’ culture of healthy living through engagement, consistent messaging, collaboration, education and policy changes.

Community Leader: Liz Duda, Tega Cay Resident

Tega Cay, SC (Aug. 11, 2017) Liz Duda is an active community member striving for a healthier lifestyle for elementary school kids in York County. She promotes healthy eating and physical activity through local efforts in Tega Cay and at Eat Smart, Move More York County. Liz is grateful for the network of people working to improve community health with whom she volunteers. Eat Smart Move More South Carolina recognizes Elizabeth Duda as a community leader.
